"Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division."
In a world where we are divided racially and seeking for social justice among people of all race and trying to promote equality in all aspect of humanity it would seem that this passage in Luke goes directly against
our efforts of unity. One would say, “Look, I thought the Christian God is a God of love and yet here it is directly teaching that he did not come to bring peace but division.” Those who do not know God would
gladly agree and ridicule those who do believe.
Yet, in context of what Jesus is speaking of is the division of eternal life and death and not of human unity. If anything, God loves us so much that he wants to unite us back to him (Jn. 3:16; Rom. 5:18) but this unity
requires a division. It requires the separation of evil and good. It requires leaving sin for holiness. It requires leaving those who pushing you towards this world and moving towards those who are leading you towards
Christians, are you willing to make the divide for your sake?
